7 Recovering Celebrities

Fame comes with a high level of stress, and many celebrities have turned to alcohol and drugs to deal with the lifestyle. It is not uncommon to hear that a star has checked into rehab. Most recently, Wendy Williams, the talk show host checked into a sober house. Her struggle with addiction is an open secret.

We will look at some celebrity stars who have come to the open with their addiction struggles and are taking or have taken the necessary steps to recovery and sobriety.

1.Wendy Williams

Wendy Williams has a history of cocaine use.  She claims that she never went for treatment but just managed to stop using.  However, she refers to herself as a functioning addict because, despite her drug use, she was able to keep on working and make good ratings for her radio show.

She also uses alcohol and has been living in a sober house since March 2019. She acknowledges that once you’re a substance abuser, it is a battle that you’ll have to her for the rest of your life. Couple fame and relationship problems; she is currently divorcing her husband; she has had to acknowledge that she needs help.

Together with her husband Kevin, she launched the Hunter Foundation, a non-profit organization that aims at educating, preventing and providing rehabilitation to drug addicts.

2.Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato has not been shy about her struggle with alcohol and cocaine, and details her struggle in some of her songs. There was a point during her addiction when she could not go 30 minutes, without taking a hit of cocaine.  She would even smuggle it into the airplane and wait for people to fall asleep before sneaking to the bathroom to do it.

At some point, she even had a sober live-in companion, but would still hide the extent of her addiction from them.  Her addiction escalated to alcohol and eating junk food.   She checked into a treatment facility in 2012 and remained clean for 6 years.  Unfortunately, in 2018, she had a relapse and had to go back to treatment.

3.Keith Urban

You probably know him as a country musician, but Keith Urban has had his fair share of addiction problems. Keith would abuse drugs and alcohol as a way of dealing with fame. He attributes his recovery to his wife Nicole Kidman, who had to stage an Intervention for him in 2006.  He had previously been to rehab twice without any lasting effect because he would relapse.

4.Robert Downey Jr

Robert’s interaction with drugs started when he was only six years of age.  Marijuana was his first drug, but he would later move on to harder drugs. He has been in several situations due to drugs and has lost many Hollywood roles as well.

Even though a close family member, his father, introduced him to drugs; it is another close family member, his wife, who made him quit. Robert checked into a treatment facility in 2003 and continues to combine the 12-step program, meditation, therapy, and yoga to stay sober.

5.Daniel Radcliff

Daniel entered into the limelight due to his role in the successful Harry Potter series.  The success came at a very young age, and to deal with the fame; he turned to alcohol use.  He did this both at home and on stage and kept it a secret from everyone else.

Fortunately, he realized that he had a problem and stopped drinking.

6.Mathew Perry

We know him as the lovable, quirky character in the TV hit series Friends, but he was facing a challenge with prescription drug and alcohol use.  When he got into a watercraft accident, he started using prescription drugs, and he got hooked.

He did seek treatment and to date shares his recovery as a tool for helping other people in similar situations.

7.Jamie Lee Curtis

Jamie Lee Curtis has a rich acting career, but she had a struggle with addiction for a long time. In 1989, after a minor plastic surgery procedure, the doctor prescribed uploads, and this is where her battle began.

For ten years, Jamie led the life of an addict, lying, stealing and trying to deal with the effects of addiction. She realized the situation was becoming dire when she stole all her sister’s painkillers during a visit.

Jamie began her road to recovery when she checked into treatment in February 1999 and has since been sober.

Final thoughts

Addiction is something that has no boundaries.  Whoever you are, you are not safe from the adverse effects of addiction.  We have just looked at seven celebrities who have had a struggle with addiction, but if you were to make a full list, it would shock anyone.

Admitting that he needs help is usually the first step, and seeking treatment is the second.  It helps when you have a reliable support system like the kind Keith and Robert Downey had in their spouses.
